  The polar bear, scientifically known as Ursus maritimus, is a large bear species that is native to the Arctic region. Polar bears have a distinctive white fur that provides camouflage in their snowy habitat.  Underneath their fur, they have black skin, which helps them absorb and retain heat from the sun.  They have a stocky build, a long neck, and a large head with small ears. Adult male polar bears are generally larger than females. On average, males weigh between 900 to 1,600 pounds (408 to 725 kilograms) and measure around 8 to 10 feet (2.4 to 3 meters) in length. Females are smaller, weighing around 600 to 1,000 pounds (272 to 454 kilograms) and measuring about 6 to 8 feet (1.8 to 2.4 meters) in length.
