  The United States of America is often described as a "melting pot" a metaphor which strives to capture the rich, dynamic mixture of cultures, languages, and traditions which have come together to create American identity.  From its colonial origins to the present day, diversity has been both a distinguishing characteristic and a driving energy moving the formation of American society forward.
