#1 The UAE Population Is 9.8 Million, Made up of 200+ Nationalities

The UAE is home to over 200 nationalities, and the expatriate community far outnumbers the population of Emiratis, with Indians and Pakistanis being the largest groups of expatriates. 

There are also large numbers of Egyptians, Jordanians, Palestinians, and Syrians living in the UAE. 

Because of this varied population, the UAE is a “melting pot” of cultures, offering a mix of rich histories in one place.


#2 The Official Language of the UAE Is Arabic

Although many residents speak English, the official language of the UAE is Modern Standard Arabic. 

The Gulf dialect of Arabic is spoken by most Emiratis, while Egyptian Arabic is also widely understood. 

However, most people in the UAE also speak English, partially due to the large population of expatriates.


#3 The UAE is made up of seven emirates 

Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain. 

Abu Dhabi is the capital and the largest of the seven. Ajman is the smallest. 



#4 Dubai is home to the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa, which stands 828 metres tall (830m if measured to the top of its antenna).



#5 Dubai is also home to the world’s biggest shopping mall, Dubai Mall, measuring 1,124,000 square metres, roughly the size of 200 football pitches. It is home to more than 1,200 stores alongside 200 food outlets.


#6 The UAE Is the World’s Third Largest Oil Producer

The UAE is the third largest oil producer in the world, behind only Saudi Arabia and Russia. 

The country’s oil reserves are estimated to be around 98 billion barrels. UAE is also the world’s seventh largest natural gas producer. 

The UAE’s oil and gas industry plays a significant role in its economy, with citizens’ fuel prices heavily subsidized.

#7 You Won’t Find a River in the UAE

The UAE is a desert country with very little rainfall. As a result, there are no rivers or lakes in the country. 

However, during certain months you’ll find the unique wetland ecosystems known as wadis.



#8 The UAE's national bird is the falcon, and the sport of falconry is a big part of Emirati culture, with Dubai’s Crown Prince Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum a keen partaker.

The UAE has one of the highest GDP per capita in the world, at $37497.58. 

Such a high GDP per capita reflects the UAE’s extensive oil and gas reserves, high-income level, well-developed infrastructure, and thriving non-oil economy.


#10 The UAE Has Existed Since 1971

The UAE was founded on 2 December 1971 when the British established the seven Emirates as independent states. 

The country officially became a federation in 1971, and the people elected Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan as the first president. 


#11 There Are Over 9,000 Mosques in the UAE

There are an estimated 9,123 mosques in the UAE, one of the highest per capita ratios worldwide. 

Their heavy presence makes sense since 76% of those living in the UAE are Muslim, and Islam the official religion in the United Arab Emirates. 


#12 You May Find Luxury Fleets of Police Cars

The police force in the UAE is one of the most well-equipped and luxurious in the world. 

The Dubai police force has a fleet of luxury cars that includes Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Aston Martins, Bugattis, Bentleys, and more.
