Here are some lesser-known facts about penguins:

#1 Not All Penguins Live in Cold Climates: 

Most people think of penguins as the animals which live in the very cold Antarctica, but in fact there are penguins inhabiting the warm waters of South Africa, Australia, and the Galápagos Islands on one of the Equator.

#2 Penguins Have Unique Vocal Patterns: 

The birds use individual vocalization in order to identify one another among thousands of other penguins and their partners, and offspring.

#3 Feathers Aren’t Just for Warmth: 

Penguins have the most number of feather per square inch that any bird has. It has tightly compressed feathers that give it the ability to keep warm in cold water which it needs to live in.

#4 They Are Excellent Swimmers: 

Researchers have found out that penguins are capable of swimming at a rate of up to 22mph or 35 km per hour. 

The ones on their back help them swim – rather like a flying fish – through the water at high speeds.

#5 Penguins Can Drink Seawater: 

This is not your day quiz endeared me to penguins because they have a unique gland above their eyes that enables them to pump salt from their bloodstream thus they can drink saltwater.

#6 Penguin “Knees” Are Tucked Up Inside Their Body: 

Although the penguins somewhat look as they do not have the knees they actually do. 

I guess their legs are tucked in a bit and their knees are situated higher up in the body formation.

#7 They Have Adapted to See Underwater: 

Strange that penguins’ eyes are built to focus on objects underwater and this penguins have to catch fish, squids and other small sea products. 

But based on their view on the ground, they are not very accurate.

#8 Emperor Penguins Can Dive Over 1,800 Feet Deep: 

Emperor penguins are noted for the fact that they like the Weddell-are deep divers and feed from down to 1800m (5600 feet) and remain under water for more than 20 minutes.

#9 Penguin Poop Plays an Important Role in the Ecosystem: 

The Penguin crap out a substance known as guano this substance very rich in nutrients and what’s more it has helped in enriching the soil where they nest thus encouraging the growth of plants in areas that were very dry.

#10 They Use Pebbles for Courtship: 

For instance, the Gentoo penguin brings pebbles and stones as gift During courtship or mating. 

The male offers a stone to the female and if she takes it the two may become a pair for reproduction.

#11 Penguins Have a Unique Molting Process: 

Unlike most other bird species, penguins may only molt once, and they do it catastrophically, losing all feathers at the same time and gaining a new coat in two to three weeks.

#12 Penguins Have Counter-Shaded Plumage: 

Hatch covering its melanistic body ranges from black to white and its black-and-white coloring is a counter-shading well-known. 

This way, they can camouflage with the ocean when their backs are风 against a bird’s eye view and from the wastage of the sea.

#13 They Are Highly Social Creatures: 

Sometimes penguins nest in large groups, listed as some of the largest bird colonies in the world with million members. 

Basic their social behaviors include swimming in circles, performing their dance like synthesizing swimming and holding each other for warmth.

#14 Magellanic Penguins Are Known for Burrowing: 

Unlike many other species that nest on the bare ground Magellanic penguins dig holes in the loose soils or sand to make the nest.

#15 Penguins Can Walk Long Distances: 

During the breeding season emperor penguins can move up to 75 miles (120 km) to get to the breeding sites on ice. 

They swim belly flat, or line themselves when they cover long distances to minimize on air drag.
